Dental Hygiene Competitive Application Fall 2025 Entry

The application will open at 7am on Saturday , February 1, 2025.
Before you begin - be sure to have an electronic copy of your shadow hours documentation, HESI A2 exam scores, and all transcripts so they can be uploaded into the application. This is mandatory for ALL applicants. You will not be able to proceed if you do not have these items available for upload. Additionally, you must have your Wiregrass and VSU student ID numbers to proceed. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

The dental hygiene clinical training involves the treatment of live work patients. Students are required to participate in recruitment of patients and maintain a chair occupancy of 90%.

Statements of Understanding
A minimum of 21 credit hours MUST be completed at VSU to meet the residency requirement. The residency requirement is mandated by the Georgia Board of Regents and is non-negotiable. Dental Hygiene courses taken while in the clinical program at WGTC DO NOT meet the residency requirement. Course credits earned through the South Georgia College Entry Program DO NOT count towards the 21 hour residency requirement. THE A.A.S. INDENTAL HYGIENE CANNOT BE AWARDED UNTIL THE VSU RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT IS MET.*

It is strongly advised that all core courses be completed prior to application to the clinical program. Core complete applicants are stronger applicants due to the quality point system utilized for selection.*

Applicants will be ranked on the following formula: Pre-Requisite Science Courses GPA (50%) + Pre-Requisite Non-Science Courses GPA (30%) + HESI A2 Exam (20%). Applicants may apply prior to being core completed, however, they will not receive quality points for incomplete classes.*

Science courses must not be older than 10 years at the time of program application. Science courses more than 10 years older must be retaken.*

It is permissible to apply with courses in progress for summer semester. A candidate may be offered tentative acceptance pending successful completion of an in progress course. Final evaluation for completion of core will take place at the END of summer semester. A current official transcript will be required.*

A preapplication orientation is held in August each year for students planning to apply in the upcoming admission period. I attended the orientation. I will upload the verification email that I received from the program director.

Statements of Understanding: Tuition & Fees
All tuition and fees are paid directly to Valdosta State University during clinical training. Students will continue to complete financial aid documentation (FAFSA, HOPE, PELL) through VSU. Students continue to pay VSU fees and tuition for the duration of clinical training.*

Required books and uniforms will be available for purchase at the VSU bookstore. Accepted students will be directed to purchase specified equipment, services, and supplies out of pocket from designated vendors.*

The list of estimated expenses is provided in the packet so that each student can be financially prepared for the expenses encountered in Dental Hygiene clinical training. Students are expected to purchase required books and instruments on the 1st day of each semester. A three (3) day grace period will be allowed. On the beginning 4th day students will not be allowed to attend class without required books, instruments or supplies. Student will be marked absent. I have reviewed the estimated expenses list . I am financially prepared for the program if selected for the fall cohort.*

Required Hours: 12 hours observing the hygienist in 2 different private practice dental offices and 1 clinical observation session in the Wiregrass Dental Hygiene Clinic. Accepted student orientation attendance requirement

Accepted students, tentatively accepted students and alternate candidates are required to attend a mandatory program orientation session in mid-June. Failure to attend the orientation will result in forfeiture of your seat in the class.

HESI A2 Scores

Applicants must have a 75 or better on each of the following individual sections of the HESI A2 exam: Reading Comprehensive, Vocabulary, Grammar, Anatomy & Physiology, and Math. Students should obtain the best score possible to improve opportunity for program admission. This exam can be taken at the Valdosta State University or Wiregrass testing center.

cycle. The HESI test score sheet(s) must be uploaded into the online application for the competitive clinical portion of
